FORT MYERS

Fort Myers used to be known as "cow town." That was back in the 1880s, though, when range hands rode on in to drink and carouse. Since then, the town has become a Florida Gulf Coast fair weather haven, where dignified gents like Thomas Edison and Henry Ford have made their winter homes. Palm trees line downtown streets, while the city's 45,000 residents are a mix of families and a substantial retiree community. In addition to its touted K-12 school system, Florida Gulf Coast University -- a public institution -- is slated to enroll its first class of students here in 1997. From late February to early April, baseball fans may want to visit Fort Myers to see the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox spring training camps. Not to be confused with Fort Myers Beach, Florida -- a nearby offshore island in the Gulf of Mexico -- Fort Myers city is still rich in resorts and other diversions for those looking for fun in the sea and sun.

You may look forward to your holidays in Florida and already start relaxing when packing your suitcase as you will need not more than a pair of shorts, tennis shoes, some T-shirts and of course your bathing shorts. Don't forget a big sun cap, your sun glasses and especially sun cream with protection factor 25. You are traveling to the "Sunshine State" and the nickname really fulfills all expectations. Florida lies on the same latitude as the big deserts in this world, the Sahara or the desert Gobi for example, but in contrary to those it presents a green excessive vegetation.
